From 1950 until 2018, we have produced around 8.3 billion metric tons of plastic worldwide, of which only 9% has been recycled.
That leaves us at around 7.553 billion metric tons of plastic still laying around in landfills or natural environments.
In the US alone, about 258 million tons of municipal solid waste (MSW) were generated with plastics comprising about 13% of it.
